The Benefits of Relaxing In a Sauna

You can do five inclined miles on the treadmill. You can lift like a bodybuilder. You can even twist your body into myriad unnatural–but very beneficial–positions on your yoga mat. But if you’re not hitting the sauna, you’re not using every weapon in your arsenal.

The sauna–that bastion of dry heat–could be difference between achieving goals and, well, the alternative. Here’s why:

Saunas can reduce muscle pain

After you’ve pushed yourself to the limit in the gym, your muscles are going to be full of blood, tired and perhaps even sore. Sitting in the sauna for 15 to 20 minutes can help reduce that pain. Studies have shown that saunas have a “tranquilizing effect” on your muscles, which causes blood vessels to expand and your muscles to relax.

Saunas flush toxin

Too much alcohol and fatty foods can leave you feeling sluggish–even after you’ve worked out. Spending some time in the sauna can flush toxins from your body. When you’re in a sauna, blood flows toward your skin, which opens pores and causes you to sweat. This sweating pushes toxins out of your body.

Saunas are good for your heart

When it comes to fitness, achieving goals is all about your heart–metaphorically and literally. Sitting in the sauna is good for your heart, lungs and blood vessels. When you’re in the sauna, your heart rate can rise dramatically, your blood vessels expand and your cardiovascular system gets a workout in an environment that’s not at all stressful.

Saunas can help you sleep better

Sleep is critical to achieving your goals. When you sleep, your body has an opportunity to rest, and rejuvenate. Research has shown that people who use saunas on a regular basis also enjoy a better, deeper slumber.

If you’re serious about achieving goals, you need to use every weapon available–and that includes the sauna. Try it, and then tell us about it at S2L. There are a lot of people out there who are pushing themselves to the limit, fighting through pain and doing everything they can to achieve their goals. You can be their inspiration.
